Runtu: Not much to tell. I’m now in my 70s, have way too many kids, and live in the Washington, DC, area. I write for a living, but unless you consider technical writing creative, this is the only creative writing I do. About halfway through my mission, I worked in the mission office.
One of my responsibilities was to get missionaries in and out of the country.
In November of X-year, I was busy getting a large group of missionaries’ paperwork done so they could go home the next month.
One of these missionaries came to town because his companion, who was from Cochabamba, was home for a family funeral.
The American companion, whom I’ll call Elder Dark Meat for reasons that will be apparent later, had a reputation for being a problem missionary with girlfriends in every town.
While they were staying with us, word came from Salt Lake that the 18-month missions would now be extended to two years, and those of us who were in the mission could choose whether to extend or go home.
Elder Dark Meat said to me that he thought he should extend his mission to “make up for lost time.” The mission president confirmed with me that Elder Dark Meat would not be going home.
The elders left town, and I pretty much forgot about it, but a couple of weeks, the mission president asked me, “Do you still have the papers for Elder Dark Meat? His family needs him to come home, so he will be going home with his group next month.”
The next month, the large group showed up in Cochabamba ready to go home. One of my companions said, “Hey, Dark Meat, what’s the real reason you’re going home? Nobody believes that crap about your family needing you.”
Elder Dark Meat laughed and said, “When I left Cochabamba, I sat next to a 16-year-old Bolivian girl, and we got talking. When she ended up naked in my bed a couple of days later, I realized I was beginning to like dark meat too much, so I’d better go home.”
A few months later I was in a small town in northern Bolivia, and the landlady told me how much she liked the teachings of the church, but she would never join because of the bad example of the missionaries. When I asked what she meant, she told me about an American who had shown up at her door one evening.
He was wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and flipflops, and had a beard. He said he was a missionary and was looking for the elders, but she didn’t believe him until he gave her his Joseph Smith Articles of Faith card.
He came back at 3:00 in the morning with two girls, and all three were drunk. I said, “I can’t believe a missionary did that,” and she went to her room and got the Articles of Faith card, which had the name and home address of Elder Dark Meat on it.
A few years later, I was working at the Church Office Building, and I saw an article in the “Mormon Stories” section about two elders giving a blessing to a dead Bolivian child. It was quite spiritually uplifting and beautiful. And then I read who wrote it: Elder Dark Meat.
It reminded me that you really have no idea what someone was like on their mission, but they come home, and everyone assumes that they served “honorably” and were highly “spiritual.”
